Very useful , and I largely agree, except for the bit about the tax on landlords. Of course, anyone with a background in Marxist politics and economics will think that landlords are a bad thing and it's fair enough to tackle them as hard as we can.

In reality, around 5 million households in the UK rely on privately rented accommodation. And if that person's rental income is taxed more heavily, they will in time have to pass it onto their tenants, do less maintenance, or stop renting the accommodation.

Approximately 45% of landlords own only one rented property. Some 80% rent fewer than five properties.

As a leftist, I feel slightly strange writing something that reads like a defence of landlords, but I feel that I'm writing something in defence of tenants.

It's rather like previous budget which increased employers' National Insurance. The leftist gut instinct is that this sounds all right, it's a Labour government taxing employers and not employees.

Since then, our local paper has frequently reported small businesses closing down, particularly in hospitality. The owners almost all say this change was the last straw. A good part of the rising unemployment level must be down to this change, and local Communities have lost their café or family restaurant.

Just wait till the changes in business rate relief etc in England come in in April.
